Not so festive facts!

  1. Over 41% home Christmas tree fires were caused by overloaded outlets or defunct light strings
  2. Decorations pose a real and increased risk of fire
    1. 46% of home decoration fires were started by candles.
    2. Cooking started 20% of decoration fires.
  3. Candle fires peak in December and January
  4. More than 1/3 of candle fires start in a bedroom
  5. Christmas cooking is a lead cause of holiday fires

Remember:

  • Place Christmas trees, candles, and other decorations at least three feet away from heat sources.
  • Use flame retardant metallic or artificial trees.
  • Keep live trees moist by giving them plenty of water.
  • Make sure that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition.
  • Have a fire escape plan and a properly functioning smoke alarm system
